New Google Earth 4.3

Hey everyone, a new version of Google Earth is out!

http://earth.google.com

It has fantastic new navigation abilities. I suggest reading up a bit, but try holding SHIFT and LEFT CLICK and moving the mouse, your viewpoint moves as if it's a videogame!

Also, hold down the RIGHT CLICK somewhere on the ground and move the mouse up and down to zoom in and out.

Under options, turn on "Terrain exaggeration" to about 2 or 3. Then you'll be able to see hills way more clearly.

Google earth rocks... ;)

Those are not new. Well, the move viewpoint (shift left click drag) is just a duplication of the mousewheel click drag. And the right click drag is the same as always. The crosshair is a nice touch though.

The thing I never realised, is the flight simulator built in. Groovy... I can buzz my skatehills now!!! :)

Hey Gadget, check out the following blog entry on Google's LatLong blog:

You will see that these are new features - the Navigation has had a major overhaul in the ways that I described... ;)

Particularly the manner in which you move the viewport - it's very different now.

Nope, it's the same...

Nope, it's the same... except for the crosshair thing. I just downloaded v.4.3 to check.
They have just duplicated the function of mousewheel click'n'drag to shift left click'n'drag... go try it.

The right click'n'drag always was zoom (a duplication of the mousewheel scroll), But what HAS changed is the behaviour near the ground. Before, it behaved as the mousewheel scroll still does, and zoomed down (and up) at a constant angle; now it changes the angle as you approach the ground, which is quite a good feature.

I don't recommend Terrain Exaggeration of 3 if you live in a mountainous area!!
(but good for England tho').

Turning on the sun is very good for picking out hills too.... especially if you set the time to evening or morning, when the shadows are longer.

Ok, I must admit I never

Ok, I must admit I never used middle click and drag on the previous version. I'm not gonna install the old version to check so I willl just believe you ;)

Terrain in South Africa is at a lower resolution than the Americas, so the exaggeration really helps, and yeah I would imagine it would help a lot for England too.

I'll be in London in 5 weeks... looking for hills there, do you know any?

Go to Greenwich park. There

Go to Greenwich park. There a quite a few runs from the Observatory at the top of the hill down to the Royal Naval College. And traffic free!
